sign: SURPRISE!
So I had a big personal SURPRISE up my sleeve. I'm sending this to you all via the hospital and just delivered our second baby girl!
SURPRISE! ;)
The blog must go on. ;)
Please don't forget our awesome giveaway for the My Smart Baby Sign Dictionary app! I can't speak enough praises for the quiz feature I love so much (there's a quick pic of it below). I keep saying the 'cons' of these apps I'm reviewing are their titles, because people think the app is less than what it is. I'm telling you - all my homeschooling, SLP, teacher, and parent friends - this app is good! Go join the giveaway! Laura, owner, of My Smart Hands, did a great job teaching adults how to sign simple concepts to children or just basic beginners.

Sign: EXCITED for this weekend! Lil's 1st Birthday!
We're very EXCITED for Little Fingers' first birthday coming up. We might even post a picture of her directly facing the camera!
As much as we're keeping it low key, we're still really enjoying planning the small event here at our house. Families are coming from out of town (and state). We had Sherri's Hobby Shop make the banners with the animals from her room decor and little Hopkins from Baby Signing Time, Adia's Photography take her picture, and Holiday Ice Cream (local ice cream shop) make her ice cream cake... it'll be her first time having ice cream! We're so very EXCITED!
I think the next several signs will be themed around our excitement, the party planning, and how the event all went down!

Thanks Candice! Great request! I use GOOD JOB all the time. (Side note: sign JOB is the same as WORK, just a nice side note. So if you're talk about your job/employment, or if you are telling students or children to do their WORK).

sign: HEAD COLD Lil's sick :(
Poor Lil has quite the HEAD COLD since last weekend. It's keeping her from sleeping soundly or even napping at all. Oh - the journeys of motherhood. We decided to use baby Vicks and the vaporizer. It's slowly getting better. We even propped her bed slightly so it can drain better. So the sign of the day: HEAD COLD.
What do you do when your little one has a cold?

sign: HURT & DOCTOR- Mommy's boo boo
So a week ago I was making Lil's baby food like I always do, but this time I had a slight knife accident... I ended up getting stitches in my thumb! That made for quite the night and whole next day (when I finally decided to seek medical attention ... and as a result, stitches). The doctor wasn't happy with me that I didn't seek medical attention the night of the incident but I figured I've been through way more severe things (e.g. child birth!).
Today the stitches finally came out - can I say 'ou-wee' again! Ouch! But, now I can get back to business - making baby food, washing my hair with both hands, getting the tabs on her diaper without a 5 minute ordeal! ... Oh - the adventures of motherhood!
**Note** about the sign HURT. It's called a 'directional sign' - meaning if your head HURTS you can move the sign to your head region and ta-da! The sign then becomes HEADACHE. If your tummy HURTS, you merely sign HURT in your tummy region and the sign becomes TUMMY ACHE. Now don't go to the extreme! Don't kick your leg up to show me a boo boo HURT on your shin! Merely sign HURT in neutral space in front of you and point to the spot! Don't worry. We'll teach more tips soon enough!

HURT - another sign I wish Lil knew
Last week, Little Fingers (a.k.a "Lil") had a bad diaper rash. For being almost 10 months old, I can tell you she's only gotten one other rash to this degree! She was mighty upset to say the least. As she laid there screaming and crying, I thought, "I wish she knew the sign HURT." If we knew ahead of time just how severe the rash was before going in there and trying to help we might have tried something different (e.g. put her right in a luke warm tub - anything but what she was going through). Our hearts HURT watching her. My husband, father, and I all tried to calm her down, distract her and get the diaper changing job done as quickly as possible!
We've surpassed the rash but it's definitely a sign on our list!
